A Spirit of Service
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
During a recent online training, a video was shared about Johnny the Bagger. At his grocery store, the head of the customer service program encouraged everyone to put their personal touch on their job to make customers feel more welcomed. "Everyone of you can make a difference and create memories for your customers that will motivate them to come back" she said. For Johnny the bagger, he wasn't sure what someone in his position could make a difference. However, he became the face of change in his store. Johnny decided to create a Thought of the Day to place in the top of each customer's bag. He and his dad typed and cut thoughts each night in preparation for the next work day.
the following month, the store manager saw that Johnny's checkout line was three times longer than the others. Although other cashiers were available, none of the customers wanted to change lanes. They all wanted Johnny's Thought of the Day.
Johnny's thoughtful act also inspired his coworkers to provide acts of kindness toward their customers. Before long, their customer base had expanded because of the love and care the employees provided them. Customer were talking to friends and encouraging them to shop at this store. Although Johnny's act was simple, it became a transformative experience because his act came from the heart.
Now, why would I share this? Because we as Christians should have the same love, compassion, and service mindset to this lost and dying world. We should make people feel loved, appreciated, and worthy of our time. Our community should be talking about our church for the love we share through God's Word. They should see Him through our lives, our actions, and our outreach.
Whatever we do should be for God's glory. Even the smallest daily encounters should be represented by a spirit of love and grace. Sure, our church is small, but just like Johnny, we cannot allow our position to dictate how we respond. Johnny the bagger transformed his store with a heartfelt act.
How can we be more like Johnny?
