From Challenge to Change
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Titus 2:11-12
I recently saw a quote that said, "If it doesn't challenge you, then it can't change you". My first thought went to life. It is full of challenges, and we are often changed by the experiences we have through these challenges. Then, my mind went to the Bible. That's where it gets real.
I think Paul had a Master's degree in challenging others. In this scripture, he reminds Titus, his son in the faith, that he is to deny the will of his flesh and allow the grace of God to guide us in living a holy and consecrated life. The scriptures here are a call to arms so to speak for Christians to live up to the challenge presented to us to live holy so that it can change our lives and the lives of those around us.
In this self-centered and self-focused, we as Christians must allow the scriptures to challenge us to do better and to be better in our daily walk with Him. We are to deny ourselves the worldly interests that lead so many down a dark path so that we can be the witness we need to be. We are to be sober minded and righteous before others so they can have an example to follow.
This would serve Titus well throughout his ministry. Many scholars believe that Titus established the city of Salona where many Christians met their fate as martyrs. It would become the hometown of Diocletian, the Roman emperor who persecuted Christians. Many feel that Titus was one of those martyred. The words of Paul no doubt ran through his mind as he stood firm on his faith and faced the ultimate death for it.
How have you allowed the scriptures to challenge you? If you haven't yet, today is a good day to start.
