Our Refuge

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, will not we fear... Psalms 46:1-2a

The old hymn Where Could I Go reminds us that this world is sinful and we will one day face death of this physical form. However, when we face trials and fears of the unknown, there is one place that will provide for us a source of comfort, peace, and strength: God.

David was familiar with this. He faced many trials in his life from threats from the king to losing his son. David knew that God and God alone could provide for us a place of rest; a refuge and the strength to make it through the trials that will inevitably plague our lives.

But that's not all He is. He is also a very present help. He is there for us as we walk through this life. There is not a moment of our lives that He is not present for, and this knowledge assures us a confidence that whatever happens along the way, He is there for us. We don't have to wake Him, wonder if He will hear, or if He will make it in time - He is there.

David then concludes that because God provides peace, strength and constant companionship for His children, we have nothing to fear. The overwhelming nature of this sinful world brings many situations that can stir fear into our hearts, but the knowledge imparted to us in these verses can be the balm our souls need to calm and quiet the fear within us.

Where can we go but to Him?
