The I in our Storm

And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. Matthew 8:26

The song "I of the Storm" by the Old Paths has always been a favorite of mine. It tells how Jesus took care of His disciples while out in a storm. He was the calm they needed during a tumultuous time in their lives. When their faith failed them, He was there to remind them who controlled even the storms.

In case you aren't familiar with the song, the chorus says:

He's the I of the storm
The center of my calm
The place where I find shelter
The place where I find warmth
The center of my ways
The keeper of my days
When I can't feel the sun shine
And my ship is tossed and torn
He's the I of the storm

I have always loved storms. Tornados are my favorite. I would be a storm chaser if I could. (The movie Twister and living in Kansas only fueled this) Tornados are complex creatures with power, control, and dynamic rotating winds that can teach us a valuable lesson. They are a mix of destruction and calm. With the updrafts, the downdrafts, the debris clutter, and darkness, they bring a sense of hopelessness. However, that sweet center is calm, silent, and peaceful. It provides a moment of clarity during the darkness.

Just remember when you are facing that storm you think will crush you - He's waiting in the peaceful center of calm. He's the shelter we are searching for when we are facing the updrafts and downdrafts of life. He's the warmth we need when this cold, sin-cursed world is doing all it can to turn our hearts from Him. Just as he was there for His disciples, He will be there for our storms - we just have to call out to Him.

Let Him be the I in your storm.
