Not Our Battle

And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands. 1 Samuel 17:47

I recently heard a new song (at least to me) and while the thought was simple, the meaning was much greater.

Little David by the Dove Brothers talks about David's encounter with Goliath. Now, we have all heard this story for most of our lives and along the way we may have missed the golden nugget found in it.

Simply put, this was not David's battle, it was the Lord's.

Goliath was mocking the God of Israel and the Israelite army stood by. When David, who was just a youth at the time, visited his brothers, he heard the mocking and saw the fear of the army. When he asked his brothers why they allowed this to continue, their response was filled with disdain and mockery of his youthfulness. "Is there not a cause?", he asked in verse 29 of chapter 17. Here, he was asking, Is God not mighty enough to defeat this mocker?

David knew that God could deliver - he had first-hand experience with it. David also knew that this battle was not his or the army's to fight. It was God's and through them this Philistine army could be defeated, despite their stature or numbers.

So, knowing this, why do we let the giants in our lives defeat us? Ephesians 6 clearly tells us that our battles are not with mere humans but with forces of darkness and demons of the devil. They are not after us, but the God that we serve. They simply use us for their purpose, and we often welcome this with open arms. We stand, much like the Israelite army, on the sidelines with defeat in our hearts and the knowledge in our heads that God is mightier than the enemy.

So, if you have a giant that is wreaking havoc in your life, give the battle to God. It's His anyway. He will provide victory in a way that defies our understanding.
