The Light of Life
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12
Light is a beautiful thing. It provides a clear path for us in the dark and keeps us from stumbling over items lurking in the shadows. It improves our moods and provides nutrients such as Vitamin D for our bodies. Light is good. God even said so in Genesis 1:4.
Light also reveals for us imperfections and discrepancies that we would miss in the darkness. When I attempt to paint something I have created, I need a lot of light to help me see the boundary lines for each color. If I paint in less light, I may see good when better lighting will reveal areas where I missed the lines.
In this verse, Jesus reminds those standing around watching Him interact with the woman caught in adultery that He is the light and will provide the way to life eternal. He was not only addressing her, but anyone willing to follow Him.
For those who have suffered a migraine, you know that sunglasses help block the light from bothering your eyes and increasing your pain. We also enjoy wearing sunglasses on a bright sunny day to block out the intensity of the sun's radiant light. They provide a barrier to reduce the light that gets through to our eyes.
Well, sin does the same thing. It acts as a barrier to prevent God's light from entering our lives. Satan will use anything he can to take our eyes off God and focused elsewhere. Our own desires, entertainment, greed, gossip, and even our friends and family can prevent us from receiving the light of God and be the barrier to our spiritual growth. Just as we put on our sunglasses in June for a picnic, we allow these barriers to keep out the light of life Jesus spoke of. We walk in a darkness of sin and see the world through our sin rather than the light God has readily available for us to follow.
What are you allowing to be this barrier? Pray that God will help you remove it and enjoy the fullness of God's light.
