A Solid Foundation

The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. Psalm 118:22

Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. Isaiah 28:16

And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: Matthew 7:26

He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:15-18

This morning on my way to work, I heard an old, familiar song by the Old Paths. "Ordinary People" speaks to God using your average Joe to fulfill His calling and to share His gospel with others. However, at the end of the first verse, it says:

God called, Peter followed,
became the rock the church
was built on, a cornerstone.

I'm going to say this loud enough for those in the cheap seats to hear - THIS IS NOT CORRECT.

In Matthew 7, Jesus was giving His disciples the understanding of who exactly He was. He begins by asking them, who do men say that I am? He then turns the question to who they think He is. Based on Peter's proclamation that He is Christ, Jesus says that Him being the Christ is the rock on which the church is built.

Good people with good intentions often have bad theology. Can you imagine the cornerstone of our faith being built on a man? O, the tragedy. It would be like the foolish man building his house on sand because we, as humans, are fallible. We all too often crumble as we face trials in our lives. If we were to place our faith in man, then our faith would live and die as we follow them, and not God. Their stumble would become our stumble.

Our foundation is a solid one, a perfect one. Jesus came to die to provide for us a way of salvation and to be the cornerstone that would withstand the wiles of Satan and hell itself. It has been tried and tempted and it will not crumble. It will not shift through the storms of life (as our faith often does) and it will remain steadfast.

Could I say this if Peter was the cornerstone of the church?

Our faith needs to have a solid foundation - one that only Christ can provide. Peter's proclamation should be ours. He is Christ, the Son of the Living God. Our firm foundation that will, if we allow, provide for us protection and providence as we live for Him on our way to Heaven.

On Christ the solid rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
