Perfect Trust

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Proverbs 3:5

Last week I decided to finally wash my car. Did I gather the supplies, find the garden hose, grab the shop vac and wash it by hand? Really, you know me so little?

No, because I could see the chaos that would ensue. Shamgar thinks everything is his toy, needs to be chewed on or licked, and doesn't think work is an actual thing. So, no, I took it to a car wash.

After paying and pulling up, I had second thoughts. I'm not the most coordinated person so I doubted my ability to actually put my tire into the guide area and could imagine the damage I was capable of if I did it wrong. I was successful and I was very pleased with myself. I placed the car into neutral and waited. Then the soap covered the windshield, and I could no longer see where I was going. This gave me further pause because I had placed my trust in a machine that could bring irreparable damage to my car and possibly myself. I was no longer in control, and I didn't like it.

Well, my car and I came out unscathed and it was cleaner for my efforts. The uncertainty I felt was unfounded and I laughed at myself.

This is not just a funny story; it has a purpose. Just as I didn't trust the car wash, I sometimes don't trust God.

Don't judge - you do it, too.

Benson's Commentary says this about the verse: "Wholly and securely rely upon God’s wisdom, power, and goodness, and upon his providence and promises, for direction and help in all thine affairs and dangers. Think not to accomplish thy designs by the strength of thine own understanding, without God’s blessing."

Has there ever been a time that God has abandoned us? Has He ever said, "Well, I'm done. Do it yourself"? No. He is faithful and always by our side, even when we make poor decisions.

While we see a small part, He sees the entire image of our lives. We have just one piece of the puzzle, but He has the whole. We think going left is the best plan of action, all the while He is directing us right.

Trusting Him requires faith. It requires us to put our life in neutral and allow Him to guide us through, even when our view is obstructed.

It also bring less heartache in the end.

So, in the car wash of life, just trust Him.
