Light Through the Darkness
And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. Luke 23:44-45
Can you imagine? Jesus had spent three agonizing hours on the cross. He suffered both physically and spiritually as He hung there. Not only did He endure the scourging, but the weight of our sins on His sinless shoulders brought a suffering we cannot fathom. Then, as if the Earth itself couldn't handle the sight of His suffering any further, the sun became dark. While solar eclipses have occurred since the dawn of time, they are brief. This darkness was all encompassing and lasted for three hours.
Something interesting to note about this darkness. According to the Enduring Word Bible Commentary, "The crucifixion took place during Passover season, and Passover is always held at a full moon. A natural eclipse of the sun is impossible during a full moon." God did the impossible to show man that He is the one true God.
I would love to know what went through the minds of those seasoned Roman soldiers. In the years of crucifixions they had partaken in, this one was markedly different. I wonder if during this time of darkness, did they change their thoughts of Jesus and who He truly was? Did the darkness provide for them time to reflect on the stories they had heard about His miracles, His healings, or His teachings? I know for one soldier, it did. Verse 47 tells us he worshipped God while saying, certainly this was a righteous man.
Then, a light came forth. Jesus cried out and willingly gave His life up as a sacrifice. In John, it is written He said IT IS FINISHED.
What did He finish you ask? I'm glad you did.
While shrouded in darkness, the veil in the temple was ripped from top to bottom. God did this for mankind to have unlimited access to Him. This was one of His tasks. The second was providing the sacrifice for our sin debt and fulfilling the purpose of the cross.
Jesus provided a light for man through the darkness of their sin. When it seems impossible to find our way out of the sinful life that we live, He calls out that He finished it for us, and we just need to trust Him.
Don't let Satan rob you of this beautiful light. Don't let him blind you to what Jesus did for us.
