The Value of a Soul

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Matthew 16:26a

What is your soul worth? To God, it is worth His Only Son. To Satan, it is worth everything that can be sent your way to prevent you from accepting God's love and repenting of your sins.

But what is it worth to you?

Now, this verse sounds, at first read, that your soul can be lost much like a coin or a cellphone. However, if you read this verse in the ESV, you'll see exactly how this is possible:

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?

Wait, what???

What does forfeit mean? It means to give up (something) as a necessary consequence of something else.

Paul stated that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Not even Satan himself can pull us from God's hand. That is an act that only we can do. It is our choice whether to accept Christ or live as the world lives. When we choose to ignore God's commands and His will and live a life of sin, we are giving up what an eternity in Heaven will be. In this passage, Jesus is speaking plainly and boldly - you can keep your earthly gains and desires, or you can save your soul.

So, what in this world is worth you forfeiting your soul for?
