Should God "Get" Us?
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Matthew 7:15
While watching the Super Bowl this past weekend, a commercial caught our attention. It began with people washing the feet of others that have different ideologies. The message of the commercial was that Jesus loved and didn't hate. The website listed at the end of the commercial was HeGetsUs.org.
Now, on the surface, this commercial shared good information. Sure, we should love those that we disagree with. Jesus did. We should be willing to place our differences aside for the gospel and showing others the love of God. However, something about this commercial didn't sit right with me and I simply couldn't put my finger on it. I thought about it throughout Monday morning and then saw a video shared by a trusted friend that put it into perspective for me.
The theme of the commercial (at least to me) was one-sided. It reminded us that Jesus loved, so should we. However, the hidden meaning was simmering just below the surface. We should coexist and tolerate the choices of others. We should love our neighbor, the website says, and accept them for who they are. We should respect them and jointly humble ourselves to understand that we are different. We should love them despite their choice to remain in their sin. Sure, Jesus taught love. He also taught righteousness, redemption and turning from sin. You don't see these in this commercial.
The world has their own thought of religion and cherry pick what they want to believe based on how they want to live their lives. They want God to stamp His approval on their sinful lifestyles by "getting" them. According to them, He should understand how they are and accept it. This is the type of religion taught by false prophets and the scripture doesn't speak too kindly of them.
No, it doesn't work that way. The plan of salvation is for "whosoever will". This means coming to Him, repenting of our sins, and accepting the sacrifice made by His Beloved Son to atone for our sins. Before we could possibly love Him, He loved us. God created mankind knowing that we would fall into sin and require a savior. We love Him because He provided a most excellent example of love - sending His Son to die cruelly.
Unfortunately, this commercial will inspire many. They will use the superficial and skewed "gospel" shown to justify their life choices and proclaim, "Well, God created me, He knows how I am, and that should be good enough". Sadly it's not.
No, God shouldn't "get" us. But thankfully, there is still time to understand Him. We need to be the lighthouse to this dark world and show them that superficial isn't good enough.

Great thoughts. I had wondered about who this group was. The commercial didn't seem right to me either. Thanks for your words of enlightenment.
Thank you Cindy! I felt the same way about this commercial. It's so sad that due to so many people seeing it, they will be deceived by Satan and continue in their sins. Such a dark world and continues to get darker. We are almost home. Thank you for this blog!
