What is your Isaac?
Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou has not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. Genesis 22:12
Yesterday morning as we gathered in the sanctuary for our morning worship, Kyle was playing a song that I really love. "When I Lay My Isaac Down" by CT Townsend. This song, while speaking about Abrahams' tough choice, carries a deeper meaning.
Abraham was an old man. For many years, he prayed for a son and was promised by God that his lineage would carry so that no man could count them. In his old age, Isaac was born and brought the beginning of this promise's fulfillment. Then, the day arrived when God asked for the unimaginable. What was Abraham to do? He had faith, but he also knew that he and Sarah weren't getting any younger.
Abraham trusted. He placed his wants, desires, love, and heartache on that altar with Isaac as he trusted that God had a plan. And He did. With Abraham's faith that He would provide, God saw that Abraham placed their relationship above all else. Abraham was willing to sacrifice his only son, the only seed he had to carry his lineage, in worship to God.
So, what is our Isaac? What is the thing/person/choice in our lives that challenges our relationship with God? God said I am a jealous God - meaning he wants all of us. What blessings are we missing out on because we hold fast to our Isaacs? It's time to lay them down so we can experience the full blessing that God has for us through our relationship with Him.

I hadn't thought of that part of the scripture like that. Thanks for the insight.
